What Is a Nameserver and How Do You Change It?

When you purchase a domain, one of the most important settings you will encounter is the nameserver. A nameserver tells the internet which server is responsible for a domain's DNS records, essentially acting as a signpost that points your domain to the right destination.

What Does a Nameserver Do?

People navigate the web using memorable names like example.com, but servers actually communicate through IP addresses. Nameservers bridge that gap by storing and serving your domain's DNS records, such as A, MX, CNAME, and TXT entries, and telling the domain registry where those records live.

When Do You Need to Change Nameservers?

  • When you switch hosting providers
  • When you want to manage your domain through a different DNS platform, such as Cloudflare
  • When you migrate your website or email services to new infrastructure

How to Change Your Nameservers

Wherever you manage your domain, you will typically find this option under a section called Domain Management or Nameserver Settings. Simply remove the existing nameserver entries and replace them with the ones provided by your new provider, usually two addresses such as ns1.provider.com and ns2.provider.com.

How Long Does It Take to Take Effect?

Nameserver changes are not instant. Because of DNS caching across the internet, propagation typically takes anywhere from a few hours up to 24-48 hours to fully complete worldwide. It is normal not to see the change reflected immediately after saving it.

Configuring your nameservers correctly is a foundational step for keeping your website and email running without interruption. It is a good habit to record your existing DNS records before making any changes, so you can quickly revert if something goes wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for a nameserver change to take effect?

Global propagation of a nameserver change usually takes between a few hours and 48 hours, depending on the domain registrar and DNS caches.

Where can I find my nameserver details?

You can find the ÇAP Hosting nameserver details in your welcome email or in the hosting service details in your client area.

Will my emails be affected if I change nameservers?

Yes. When you change nameservers, your DNS records (and therefore your MX records) change as well, so your email service may be interrupted until the switch is complete. We recommend backing up your current DNS records before the change.
